Job Description
We are looking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a well established local firm. As the Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for designing bespoke mechanical hardware and take ownership of mechanical design projects from initial customer requirements through 3D CAD modelling, detail detailing, manufacturing support, and commissioning. Key Responsibilities Bespoke System Design: Design and detail bespoke systems 3D CAD Modeling & Drafting: Create complete 3D assemblies, 2D manufacturing drawings, Bill of Materials (BOMs), and layout drawings using SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D CAD software). Engineering Calculations: Conduct mechanical calculations for motor sizing, structural integrity, load capacities, and cycle times. Turnkey Collaboration: Work closely with in-house control engineers, software developers, fabrication team, and project managers to ensure seamless system integration. Product Improvement & Innovation: Continuously refine existing product designs to improve manufacturability, cost efficiency, assembly speed, and operational performance. Site Support & Commissioning: Support workshop assembly and occasional site installation/commissioning teams to resolve design modifications or on-site fitting challenges. Supplier & Client Liaison: Interface with component suppliers (bearings, motors, belts, pneumatic) and liaise with clients to clarify design specifications and design reviews. Requirements & Qualifications Education: HND/HNC or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent hands-on experience). Experience: 3+ years of proven mechanical design experience within automation, special-purpose machinery, or heavy mechanical equipment. Technical Skills: Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and 2D drafting. Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (sheet metal fabrication, laser cutting, machining, welding, and assembly techniques). Knowledge of pneumatic circuits, electric motors, gearboxes, and power transmission components. Problem Solving: Excellent analytical skills with a practical, hands-on approach to engineering challenges. Communication: Clear written and verbal communication skills for team collaboration and customer reviewsHours of work are flexible between 07:30 and 17:00 with the option to work 37.5 or 40 hours per week. 33 days annual leave Pension Randstad CPE values diversity and promotes equality.
